Purchase Order Vs. Sub-Contract

One of the differences between stick built elevators and modular elevators has little to do with the actual structure, quality, or the well known speed of installation and safety of the process. It has to do with the purchasing of the unit itself. As usual the flexibility of the modular elevator surpasses the old-fashioned stick-built option. Largely because there is no option when it comes to stick-built. Purchase order or sub, modular is your solution.

The reason for the flexibility when it comes to the purchase of a modular elevator is because depending on the needs of the customer, we can be considered a turnkey product with us as the subcontractor or as a product that drops into place like any other component of a building project procured through a purchase order.

We have Special Abilities Not Super Powers

What gives us this special ability are not super powers from a long lost civilization, spider bite, or far away planet; it is the fact that a modular elevator is a single product that has a manufactured hoistway and contains a completed elevator inside. The hoistway contains the finished elevator car, rails, ropes, or jacks all pre-wired and pre-installed in most circumstances (hall calls and all!). People are often surprised when the elevator is swung into place, plugged in, and started up in just one day. Because of the ease of installation, a Phoenix Modular elevator can be and often is viewed as a product that requires no more that a purchase order, just like the rest of the building components, such as windows or doors. Of course, an elevator technician is necessary for the setup and to assist with the required inspection, but with our elevator you have a product ready to install and purchasing flexibility.

A stick built elevator, on the other hand, can’t compete with this process largely because they don’t come with a hoistway. They arrive at the work site with the elevator unit in pieces with a pile of boxes and crates, often looking more like scrap metal than a finished elevator. Then the assembly takes place in a cramped, enclosed space: a vertical elevator shaft. Dangerous lifting and moving of heavy rails is required and each piece has to be laboriously assembled. This creates lots of inconsistency in the quality, takes tons of time and also makes purchasing it as a finished product through a simple purchase order impossible.

Stick-Built Elevators Come in a Pile of Parts

To put it into more familiar terms, our elevator can be like ordering a car from a dealership. Once it comes off the truck and gets checked out, it can roll off the lot and be parked in a driveway, ready for use. A traditional elevator is like going to a dealership for a car and after you write the check, they mail you a bunch of parts on pallets and in crates that you have to store in a locked, secure area until the mechanic gets around to your project.  Then, as long as the temperature stays above 55 degrees Fahrenheit, they start putting all the pieces together. Our elevators are manufactured as a complete unit, whereas the stick-built elevators are cobbled together on site, starting as pieces meant to be put together in a vertical shaft. Big difference.

Purchase Order is Easy

For us the buying process can be completed as if we’re only supplying the elevator or if we’re coordinating the whole project so that it’s turn-key through a sub-contract. Because the product and services that you, the customer, are actually paying for are mostly done in-factory, a lot of what’s in a traditional sub-contract doesn’t apply to us. Often times there is a lot of paperwork that complicates the process for no real purpose.  This flexibility makes modular elevators faster, safer, smarter, and better.
